Two Main Definitions

The term "binary" is used in two ways within the collector community, and it's important to understand the distinction:

Strict Binary (0 and 1 only)

A strict or true binary uses only the digits 0 and 1, creating a pattern similar to digital binary code:

  • 10110101
  • 01010101
  • 11110000
  • 01001101

Strict binary notes are the rarest type, as they're limited to combinations of just two digits.

Broad Binary Definition

Many collectors accept any two-digit combination as binary, such as:

  • 11331133 (using 1 and 3)
  • 77228877 (using 2, 7, and... wait, that's three digits, so not binary)
  • 55995599 (using 5 and 9) ✓
  • 44666644 (using 4 and 6) ✓

Frequency and Rarity

True binary notes (0 and 1 only) are extraordinarily rare. There are only 256 possible combinations using eight positions with two digits (2^8), but only 254 of these (excluding 00000000 and 11111111, which fall into the "solid" category) qualify as true binary. The actual frequency of encountering a true binary in production is roughly 1 in 10 million notes.

Broader binary definitions (any two-digit combination) are more common but still relatively scarce—approximately 1 in 180,000 for any arbitrary pair.

Common Misconception

Binary notes have nothing to do with computers, despite the resemblance to computer binary code (base-2 numbers). The term is purely descriptive of the digit pattern and has no functional significance beyond collector appeal.

Value and Collectibility

True binary notes (0 and 1 only) command high premiums due to their rarity. A circulated strict binary can be worth $50-$200. Uncirculated examples typically range from $150-$500. Broader binary definitions carry smaller premiums but are still recognized by specialty collectors.

Verification

To verify if a note is binary, simply count how many distinct digits appear in the eight-digit serial. If the count is exactly 2, it's binary. If it's more, it's not. If it's 1, it's a solid (a different and rarer category).
